Drop And Give Me 30 – Day 5 – Are We Fit Over 50 If We’re Not Fat?

Posted on Friday, March 5th, 2010

How Is Fitness Defined At 50+?

How is your personal fitness defined?  Not fitness according to somebody at the gym, or your neighbor, or your family, or your friends, or the magazines.

That is a big question when it comes time to pick the fitness program you want to use.  As I discussed a few days ago, fitness is defined differently at different ages.  So, how do you define your fitness after 50?

I define fitness as a feeling.

It’s the feeling I have when I can walk outdoors without worrying about if I’ll have the stamina to keep up.

It’s the feeling I have when I can get down on the floor and play with my grandkids, and get back up again.

It’s the feeling I have when I can get in and out of a row boat.

It’s the feeling I have when I can take a walk up and down hills without being slowed down by my labored breathing.

It’s the feeling I have when I can walk on a sandy beach without wishing for a more solid footing.

It’s the feeling I have when I can hop on my bike and not be afraid that I’ll lose my balance.

How Do You Define Fitness For Yourself?

Most men and women after 50 define their fitness a little differently than they did in their 30’s or 40’s.  Yes, I still want to fit comfortably in my clothes and look trim.  I’m sure we all do.

The difference is the motivation for getting fit and staying fit after 50.

If you get up each day and exercise in order to feel good that day, you’re probably on your way to a more fit future.

However, if you get up each day and look forward to someday when you’ll lose that weight you put on or get back in those jeans you had to set aside, you’ll probably stay in that mindset of “someday.”

I invite you to join me in my quest for fitness that makes me feel good.  I’m not setting a weight loss goal (although that will be nice when it comes), nor am I pulling out all my ‘skinny’ clothes with that goal in mind.

No, I’m setting one goal and one goal only – to exercise every day, 10 minutes, twice a day.  That simple daily goal is something I can focus on and not lose sight of.

Diets and exercise programs come and go, but to commit to do something, anything, every day is a program I can sink my teeth into!  I hope you can too!

Just 10 minutes twice a day and you’ll ramp up your metabolism (which I know, ladies, is sluggish these days), build muscle to burn fat, and feel better all day long.

A couple short bursts of exercise during the day increases oxygen to the brain and gets your day moving in the right direction again.
