Kermit The Frog… A Frog For All People

Kermit The Frog, pragmatic friend with the heart of an idealist. He often reminds me of the possibilities in the impossible dream. He also reminds me that it takes strategy to accomplish any dream. Kermit The Frog is an amphibian with a mission. He lives life very large. He takes what’s given to him, accepts his limitations, then goes about making things happen.
I was out on my walk recently, when I was reminded again of the struggle we all share with our friend Kermit, the struggle between dreams and reality. I was listening to my favorite walking music, The Bellamy Brothers, on my iPod, when all of a sudden “It’s Not That Easy Bein’ Green” by Kermit The Frog is playing. You see, my dear son-in-law loaded songs on my iPod for me because I don’t know how to begin doing such a thing. My son-in-law has a heart of gold and kindly suffers my many foibles, and has a little fun with me in the doing. So, in the middle of my Bellamy Brothers walking music, he stuck a little classic Kermit there for me. Very fun, indeed. But also very enlightening, as Kermit’s observations are known to be.
As I’m listening to Kermit sing, I see a common thread. It’s also not that easy bein’ gray, havin’ to spend each day the color of… cement, which was a looming thought and, quite frankly, very depressing. We’re not talking hair here, we’re talking gray inside and out. I already color my hair, so now what? Everyone goes through some “gray” times in their life, but when we’re younger we expect those times will pass, and usually, without a whole lot of effort on our part, they do. Unfortunately, when we reach a more mature age, we don’t have the luxury of letting time pass to get beyond those gray times. How do we get beyond the gray times? How does Kermit The Frog work his way through this one?
If you know the song, then you know that, in typical Kermit fashion, he realizes that green is not only the color of the leaves, green is also big like the ocean, important like a mountain, and tall like a tree. Now I can sit up a little straighter, thanks to Kermit. Because gray is also solid like a boulder, wild like a storm, and calm like a cloud.
“And, I think it’s what I want to be.”
