Great American Smokeout Challenge … Give Yourself A Break
Posted on Thursday, November 20th, 2008
I smoked when I was a teenager and gave it up cold-turkey when I turned 19. Just from smoking those few years, I know how addictive it is. I LOVED to smoke! I LIVED to smoke! I was a certified chain smoker. Now, I HATE cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke is no friend to these lungs. I am increasingly intolerant of even the tiniest hint of cigarette smoke in my atmosphere. I am also increasingly intolerant of smokers.
My family and I watched our Dad die at the age of 62, destroyed physically and mentally by emphysema. This is a hideous disease, and is only one of the deadly consequences of a lifetime of smoking.
I’m not sure what it’s going to take to get people to give up this most devastating and vile of all habits. Our Dad looked to be 90 years old at age 62. Is that not reason enough to put down those cigarettes? Can you think of one good reason why you are still participating in this loathsome activity?
Give yourself, and the people who love you, a break. Join the American Cancer Societies Great American Smokeout and live to tell your grandchildren and great-grandchildren how you beat this despicable habit, and lived to celebrate a wonderful life. Do it today, do it tomorrow, but just do it. Quit smoking every day if you have to. Just quit.
