Blue Mountain eCards And More – A Pleasant Surprise For This Luddite
Posted on Monday, March 11th, 2013
I guess I’d have to say I’m sort of a hold-out when it comes to accepting certain change, like technology, for instance. The word the kids are using nowadays is ‘Luddite.’ You’ll recognize a Luddite by these phrases:
“It was better when…”
“Back in my day…”
“Why can’t we still just…”
“What ever happened to…”
“It was good enough for me…”
Well, you get the point. If you want to read a more informative look at the term click here: WiseGeek – What’s a Luddite?
Now, I’m not really old enough to get TOO cranky about technology. After all, I use it every day. (Case in point; you’re looking at it.)
But, there are certain things that I’ve dragged my feet about through the years. One of them is electronic greeting cards, or ‘ecards.’
I am still absolutely unequivocally opposed to ecards in certain circumstances – sympathy, weddings, and serious illness. However, as more and more of my family and friends move into the world of social media and modern day communication, I find ecards are, as a general rule, well accepted.
Sending electronic messages via email is not only convenient, but can often be more fun than a card in the mail. For instance, I recently sent my grand-nephew an electronic birthday card that was animated – it was like a mini movie. That’s just plain fun! It’s something he can watch and have a few giggles. I like that.
And, Facebook has become a gathering of the clan. Posting an ecard on Facebook is something that is shared with everyone. It’s like having a little party, only without all the work.
So, how does all this electronic connection sit with me now?
I’m liking it more and more.
Again, there are times when an ecard simply should NOT be sent, in my opinion. But, if you want to just let someone know you’re thinking of them and spread a little joy or a few laughs, ecards are perfect.
I’ve come a long way, baby, to get where I’ve got to today. Yes, I am enjoying sending electronic greetings more and more now. Part of the reason is incredibly funny, entertaining, and clever companies like Blue Mountain are putting out ecards I can’t resist.
So, here’s the story…
When Blue Mountain asked me if I would take a look at their ecards and other products and share my opinion, I thought, “Sure.” So I logged in to take a peek. Since St. Patrick’s Day is coming up, I started there, by testing a few ecards to see what would happen. (Full disclosure: I received a year membership in return for my review.)
Well, 3 hours later, I was still scrolling around, sending cards, postcards, letters, talking ecards, and singing telegrams! I even downloaded their cute calendar to my desktop!
This company, Blue Mountain, has a hilarious selection of ecards that I know my family and my friends will get a kick out of. And, did I mention the variety of ways to send these messages? I wrote a letter on pretty ‘stationery’ and emailed it to my cousin. I sent a St. Patrick’s Day talking card to myself just to test it, and laughed my butt off! (BTW… When I moved my cursor around the picture the cat’s eyes followed the cursor! Just so you know.) I sent a Facebook message to my grand-daughter with a cute little skate-boarding puppy to say ‘thank you’ for making me a pair of earrings.
Okay, I’m having way too much fun with this!
What I like about this ecard company is there are so many options. You can email personal messages, easily post to Facebook, and especially for ‘luddites’ like me, you can actually design and PRINT your own cards, including inserting your own photos. OH! And you can attach gifts to your email cards, such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Mrs. Fields gift cards.

I think Blue Mountain is well worth the membership, especially if you use all the options – ecards, talking ecards, singing telegrams, stationery, postcards, print cards, calendars, etc. etc.

p.p.s. Next week Sunday is St. Patrick’s Day. I know you have somebody in your life who would love a little puppy or kitty saying ‘Erin Go Bragh‘ or some such thing. Sign up for your free trial and send out your ecards now!
Do you ever send eCards, and, if so, for what occasions? Are there times when you wouldn’t send an eCard, ever? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please leave a comment below to share your thoughts and experiences with electronic greeting cards.

I might have a look but still like old fashioned cards and invitations. I love buying stationary- have tons of it– and hardly ever use it.

Oh yes, Lisa, I do love stacks and stacks of stationery. I also appreciate the feel of paper, especially handmade and artisan paper.
Yeah, there is just something about receiving a card in the hand. But, I know, especially with my younger family members, they look for their birthday greetings in their Facebook and not their mailbox too much anymore.
Thanks for stopping by, Lisa, and taking the time to read and comment.

Patti,
I used Blue Mountain several years ago and for some reason got away from it. I’m definitely going back to try it out again. Great review! And I love that term, Luddite. I never heard it before. I’ll be using it more, too!

Hi Nina. Thanks for stopping by. I suspect Blue Mountain has added features as time has improved so many technical thingies. Those talking cards are so funny. You have to play around with the phonics a bit when you type in the words you want the card character to say. That alone is good for a laugh!
And, yes, I discovered the word ‘luddite’ only a few days ago. It was being used in a derogatory way describing an older person who was all cranky about cell phones being used as another appendage. This person was especially irritated that her dinner companion had to keep picking up her cell phone every time it ‘dinged’ because it “might be important.” Her friend was NOT a brain surgeon. The calls were not coming from anyone in danger. The conversations (“Excuse me. I have to take this.”) were more on the line of, “Are you planning on going to Sue’s shower?” blah blah blah. So, if rudeness is modern, then call me a Luddite. I prefer it.

That’s interesting that this is the area you resisted. My mom and I sent blue mountain cards back when we used AOL instant messenger and thought it was the best thing we’d ever used.
I agree on the situations when they are not appropriate.

I know, Pam, isn’t that crazy? Of course, that’s not the ONLY area I find myself a true ‘Luddite.’ I’m sure the list goes on, if I just stop to think about it. Upcoming blog posts perhaps?
😉

You know Patti, I used to send Blue Mountain cards for the fun of it but for some reason had dropped that. Don’t be surprised if you find one for St. Pat’s in your inbox! It will be the first to start again.
I loved this post! You have such fun style! And, you stretched my brain: Luddite – I had never heard of this one nor read about it.

Hi Ute – Thanks for the compliment. I just recently heard that word (luddite) myself. Interesting. Yes, it has been fun scrolling around the world of Blue Mountain. Just playing with the talking cards has given me the giggles. I hope you have as much fun with them as I did, Ute! Thanks for stopping in, reading, and taking the time to comment. 😀

Hey Patti! Yep, I too used Blue Mountain at one time and got away from it somehow. I think it’s time to look into it again. Loved this post by the way. Your reviews are excellent.
