Hey Boomers, Got Aches And Pains? Well, Wa Wa Wa – Here’s Your Kick In The Pants
Posted on Saturday, April 16th, 2011
Living a healthy, strong, and happy life over 50 may be just the beginning. Take a lesson from some remarkable folks who are creating a vibrant lifestyle way, way, way beyond 50.
Yup… you read that right. Over 90 & Loving It!
That’s 90, folks!
When Mary Eileen Williams over at FeistySideOfFifty.com sent out a link to her interview with filmmaker Susan Polis Schutz, I casually clicked on and took a look. I was not prepared for the incredible journey I was about to take.
In this documentary, Over 90 & Loving It you’ll see real people in their 90’s and beyond, who are doing things that many of us wouldn’t even attempt in our ‘younger’ years. To get a sneak peek, click on this link to watch the movie trailer or go to www.over90film.com
What I quickly learned was:
1) don’t complain
2) don’t worry
Aren’t those two things we already know? They should be. But, why do we, and by ‘we’ I mean ‘me’… keep forgetting that lesson?
According to Ms. Schutz, the thing she found most surprising about her interviews with these folks was their absolute refusal to discuss their health problems or limitations. I mean, come on… they’re over 90! They’ve got to have some complaints and have definitely earned the right to sound off a bit, right?!
Nope… not one complaint.
And, don’t we all have stuff to worry about? Well, apparently the answer is no. Nothing. Worry is an absolute waste of time and energy. Coming from a 90 plus year old, I guess you could take that to the bank.
Nope… not one worry.
So, once again, an older, wiser person has paved the way to a better understanding of what the heck we’re doing to ourselves. I guarantee, the next time I feel like complaining because of this ache or pain, or I find myself worrying for whatever reason, I’ll think about those nonagenarians and their durn confounded optimism, dagnabbit!
See? I’m practicing already to be a wild and crazy 90 year old. How’d that sound?
Now, get out there and exercise, breathe in that good air, and thank the lucky stars you’ve learned your lesson at a young age, dagnabbit! Hey, this is starting to come natural!
By the way, you can read about my view of fitness through the decades by clicking on ‘Is Fitness After 50 Unique‘ and also be inspired by FatLossQuickie Scott Tousignant’s 87 year old friend and what he does to stay in shape and feel young. Need yet another reminder not to take your aches and pains as an excuse not to exercise? Check out ‘Doing Wall Squats Into Your 90s‘
And… when you’ve had enough of feeling like a real whiner, check out my ‘Drop And Give Me 30 Fitness Series‘ for fun. Yeah, fitness can be fun. Go ahead, give it a try. Just ask a 90 year old who’s living the good life – it didn’t happen by sitting on their butts, complaining and worrying.
Have a remarkable day!
p.s. You can see the documentary Over 90 & Loving It on PBS; just check your local schedule. But, you may want to buy your own copy to enjoy over and over, or to share it with a loved one who needs a reminder or two. wink wink

p.p.s. And Please Please Please, I beg you, unashamedly, leave a comment below. Pretty please?! It gets lonesome here on the ‘Internets.’ I long to know your thoughts, your desires, your deepest darkest secrets… no, really, just your thoughts. Let me know what you think about what I talked about today. How will I learn anything if you don’t teach me? Thanks for visiting!
p.p.p.s. Is it a full moon?

I LOVED reading your take on “Over 90 and Loving It!” Susan Polis Shutz has inspired both of us (along with thousands of others) with her amazing group of feisty nonagenarians. Their energy, spunk, and positive outlook left me feeling high on aging and I urge all of your readers to check this film out. It’s a winner, for sure!

Hi Eileen!
I’m just so glad you shared that link on Facebook. I would have hated to miss that interview and the documentary.
The attitude is what really impressed me. That’s what I love about truly Remarkable Wrinklies like these wonderful people. It’s not so much what they do; it’s how they respond to life – the good, the bad, and the ugly! It is just so durn inspirin’! Dagnabbit! There I go again… preparing for my 90’s!
Thanks, Eileen, for checking out my blog and leaving a comment. You know I appreciate it!

I saw the documentary and found it interesting that most of the 90 year olds found some sort of work … it kept them interested/interesting, brain/body active. So retiring is NOT the answer, heh?

You got it! Retirement is NOT an option. But, not being retired and staying in a j-o-b are not necessarily the same thing. 😉 I can’t imagine not doing SOMETHING productive, even if it’s just having a wonderful garden, or raising dogs… like Mom. I’ve seen people who don’t do anything… it’s not pretty. Thanks, OSS, for visiting with me. I love the company! It gets lonely here on the ‘Internets.’
