German Shepherd Rescue – The Weather Channel Made Me Cry
Posted on Saturday, January 23rd, 2010
We lost Mom four years ago today. Anniversaries of the passing of someone we love are often harder on our mind, body, and soul than we realize. I’ve been moping around here for days, maybe not realizing quite the affect this date has on me.
I woke up early today, remembering the events of that day, and the days that followed. Then, I went back to bed, to the comfort of sleep.
When I woke up again, I tuned into the Weather Channel (yes, I love it). And, what do I see but a remarkable story about a person with a generous heart pulling off an incredible rescue. Why did this particular story touch me? The man was rescuing a German Shepherd – the breed which was my Mom’s constant companion throughout the years.
I learned from my Mom that we must respect our pets, no matter how sweet they are, and remember that they are animals first, pets second. When they are wounded or in trouble, they don’t know you are there to help. But, we love them still and try to help them no matter what. Here’s the video. Watch it and you’ll see what I mean.
Animals in trouble always break my heart. Animals are innocent beings and can’t rationalize situations, which makes them vulnerable to dangers. To watch that rescuer risk life and limb and not give up on that poor dog, no matter how the dog lashed out at him in fear, is a testament to not only the training of the rescuers, but the soul of the man.
My Mom understood dogs. She had a generous heart but knew and respected the nature of the animal, both the four legged kind and the two legged. I’m reminded by that rescue to honor my Mom’s gentle, kind heart, but also her honest and realistic approach to life.
Thanks Mom. I miss you and love you.
