Drop And Give Me 30 – Days 6 & 7 – Weekend Walk And Easy Breathing
Posted on Sunday, March 7th, 2010
Exercise after 50 – the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
This weekend I had time to dedicate to a lengthy pursuit, one which I love – walking.
Walking and I have been friends for a long, long time. Of course, we’ve had our ups and downs through the years, but we’ve always managed to find each other again and pick up where we left off.
In the past, whenever I would manage to hook up with my friend ‘walking’ again after an extended sabbatical, I’ve noticed how I wouldn’t feel so good starting anew. Most notably, I would get winded going up and down the hills.
You see, besides being a bit out of shape, I have a slight case of allergy-driven-asthma. So, sure enough, in the spring when my allergies hit, if I exert myself, say by walking up and down hills, I would tend to get a bit tight in the chest, my breathing would be somewhat labored.
My walks usually are about 6 miles, up and down some pretty good hills, so I should get somewhat winded and tired, but in a good way – not in the ‘tight chest wheezing’ kind of way.
But, I’ve noticed something different the last few times I walked. Yes, it’s spring, and yes, my allergies are at a pretty aggravated state. But, this time when I walked, I didn’t get that same ol’ asthmatic-style breathing! I didn’t get winded, my chest didn’t get tight, my lungs didn’t fail me. hmmm… what could be the difference?
One of the things I’ve been doing all winter long is my Quickies. With the help of Scott Tousignant and the Fat Loss Quickie fitness program I have been doing my workouts throughout the winter and maintaining my strength.
Could doing my Quickies all winter be the reason I can start walking again in the spring, at the height of allergy season, without having to slow down because my lungs can’t keep up? Maybe. Possibly. Probably.
All I know for sure is that I feel better and I enjoy my springtime walks again. As a matter of fact, it looks like the sky is clearing. Time to run… I mean walk. This is gonna be a great day!
