Drop And Give Me 30 – Day 26 – Baby Steps

Posted on Friday, March 26th, 2010

The AMA Study about women over 50 losing weight had us going there for a minute…

Okay, we may be down, but we’re not out.

We all heard about the new AMA study right?  This is the study that found it’s impossible for women over 50 who have gained weight during the perimenopause and menopause years to lose weight.  We can never, ever exercise the weight off.

The study shows that women over 50 who just want to MAINTAIN their weight have to exercise 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week.

I’m still wondering exactly what exercises these women in the study were doing.  I know I lost weight by doing Scott’s FatLossQuickie fitness program, exercising with weights, doing  10 minutes twice a day, 5 days a week.  However, I did this exercise along with riding my bike when I could and walking, also.

PLUS, I have been eating a diet that consists of oatmeal, flax meal, soy milk, nuts, green tea, vegetables, brown and wild rice, beans, chicken, and seafood.

And, yes, this woman is not easily separated from her wine.  So, there’s my vice – but come on!  No ice cream, no cookies, no chips, hardly any meat, no bread…

Will this woman over 50 lose weight?  Damn straight I will!

Will I see it melt off in a weekend, week, or even a month?  Probably not.

That’s where the baby steps come in.

When I started doing Scott’s FatLossQuickie fitness program, I had trouble with most of the exercises.  Now, instead of doing 3 leg extensions on my floor ball, I do 30.

For now, I will continue to strengthen my body and not be too concerned about losing weight.  Baby steps.

Then, as the months roll along, I intend to prove that a woman over 50 CAN lose weight.

When we hear all those promises of “just 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week” we know that sounds too good to be true. Well, now we have the study to prove it.  I believe that taking an hour long walk every day won’t help a woman over 50 lose weight – that is if she is still eating like she did when she was 20, 30, or even 40.

Scott will be the first to tell you that his FatLossQuickie exercise program alone will not give you total health and fitness. For that reason, he also offers nutrition tips and recipes, along with motivation to get you outdoors doing things you enjoy – things that continue to burn fat and build muscle while you have fun.

I’ll check back in and let you know if my theory is right, or if weight loss is a lost cause for women over 50 years old.

Don’t let this new AMA study scare you. Remember that we always knew this somewhere in the back of our mind. Now we just have to put our fitness first and make time to do what we know we have to do.

I hope you’ll stop by Remarkable Wrinklies often. And, do try to fit exercise into your daily routine.

I meant to tell you – my mom, who has been overweight her whole adult life (sometimes as much as 75 lbs. overweight) lost over 50 lbs. in the last three to four years — and she’s over 70!

    She did it by:
-Going to Curves several times a week
-Walking about 30-45 minutes almost every day
-Cutting carbs and all “white” refined carbs.

She was diagnosed with borderline diabetes and got the wake-up call, and immediately made these changes to address her health. I am just sorry she wasted so many years overweight. 🙁

But IT CAN BE DONE! She is an inspiration to me.

I should clarify… no one’s life is “wasted,” so I don’t mean you have to be a normal weight to enjoy life or be happy. But I know the excess weight made her self-conscious, defensive, and unhappy. And I wish she could have had the physical freedom she has now when she was younger.

I understand fully, Lain! 😉 I, too, have felt years of my life “wasted” while I was depressed over my weight and/or general health and fitness. I avoided (or feared) get-togethers that involved fewer clothes than a parka!

There was one moment when I had difficulty getting out of a boat (my legs were just too weak) that turned my life around. I thought “If I can’t get out of a boat, does that mean pretty soon I won’t be able to play with my grandkids like I want, sit on the floor and be able to get back up?” That mortified me enough to get exercising. And now? I’m strong and physically able to do anything I want. The weight? It’s not ideal, but better.

Congrats to your Mom. Keep it up and I know she’ll have physical freedom once again!
