Does Keeping Fit After 50 Help You Enjoy Your Life, or…
Does Enjoying Your Life Help You Keep Fit?
What came first, the chicken or the egg? Who knows.
But, one thing I do know is that without being physically strong, life after 50 is a lot more difficult and oftentimes sad.
We’ve all either been there or know somebody who has. The years are unkind, the weight starts to pile on, exercise gets more difficult, and the gradual decline begins. This might happen early in someone’s life; it might happen later. Either way, the inevitable disappointment begins.
Disappointment that we can’t take a bike ride with our family and friends. Perhaps we can’t get in a canoe, or worse yet, out of a canoe. Maybe it’s just a little pile of little disappointments, but they start to become a big pile over time.
One of my great joys is riding my bike. I go over to my daughter’s house and we hop on our bikes and pedal around on a nice little road. We sometimes load up our bikes and ride at the beach or on a trail not too far from us. We always have a great time, and the exercise is wonderful!
Not all our bike rides are easy. This is a picture that my friend Anne-Marie took of me during one such ride.
It was a beautiful, sunshiny day and we were on a wonderful bike ride along the beach. However, the riding was made a bit more difficult by Hurricane Ida and her remnants.
The sign you see there in front of the plow says “bike path.”
That was NOT an easy ride.
And that’s my point. A couple years ago, I would not have been able to make that ride.
But, because I have been exercising, walking, and riding my bike, I could enjoy the company of my daughter and friends on a wonderful, long, and somewhat difficult bike ride. With the sand on the road and the roar of the surf in our ears, we were off having a great time!
Is Your Level Of Fitness Keeping You From Fully Enjoying Your Life?
If it is, set a new goal for yourself today. Join me in deciding to do some form of exercise every day. I chose to work out with weights for 10 minutes each day, then do 10 minutes of cardio, and when time permits, do one more thing I enjoy. This is a simple goal that I won’t lose sight of.
I can commit to do something, anything, every day. Can you?
