Back From Vacation… The Connection Has Been Made Once Again
Posted on Friday, July 3rd, 2009
Yikes! I don’t know about all ya’ll, but vacationing is hard on a body! I still haven’t recovered from my “relaxing” week on the beach which I returned from almost a week ago.
If you’re like me, you want everything to run smoothly while you’re on vacation, but you want the thrill of the unexpected, too. Can you have it both ways?
At a “certain age” we like our comfort, our routine, and our schedules. Everything should come off without a hitch, but with many pleasant surprises in store. But, that’s life. We all say we want things to just tick along quietly, but the surprises are what keep us alive and, well, living.
Three generations gathered at our rented beach house this year. One of the highlights of my week was watching my granddaughter squeal with delight as she and her newly-found cousin chased “ghost crabs” with flashlights up and down the shoreline. There is nothing like the shrieks of 8 and 9 year old girls. Ah, youth. We lit a campfire on the beach (was that legal?), sang our favorite songs (off key for some of us), and had a wonderful evening of viewing the most brilliant stars you’re ever going to see.
I guess with this little post I’d like to just say, don’t let the opportunity to gather with your family escape you. Too many years went by between my visits with my cousins when we were young. Now that we’re older, we cherish every moment we have together to share our stories, our family history, our laughs, and our tears. We were busy during our 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s. We had families to raise. We had no time to stay connected.
I’m here to say “Make The Time.” You won’t get those years back, no matter how many times you tell the stories. Don’t wait until you’re 50 or 60 to call your cousin. Call now. Memories are just itchin’ to be made!

My dear cousin called me on my 50th birthday, just out of the blue. We were very close as children, and communicated as young mothers, but then the middle years of careers, teens, etc., got in the way. It was such a gift to hear her voice on my birthday – and to think she had even thought about me! I was touched. And now that cousin and I communicate often and see each other every two years, no matter what. I love her dearly. She is a HUGE part of my life. Yes, do make the call. It might change someone’s life dramatically – even yours!

My Dear OSS,
Yes, you said it… the life you change may be your own. With just one simple call, my life has been enriched beyond words. The ripple effect may not be fully felt at the time you pick up the phone, but in my own personal life, I hope the effect will reach my children and grandchildren’s lives… and beyond. Thank you for your warm and kind words, OSS. You are in my heart always.
