Birthdays Should Be Celebrated… Not Just Counted
Posted on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008
I love my birthday. Truth is, I love everybody’s birthday. Maybe because, being raised in a large family, my birthday was something that was uniquely and unequivocally mine. It also could be because our birthdays were celebrated with great fanfare. Mom made a fancy homemade cake, you got to request your favorite dinner, and you were basically a celebrity for the day. We actually tried to stretch that out a bit, claiming that we were celebrating our birthday “two days before and two days after”, which lost its charm quickly among the siblings. Birthday gifts were not the focus of the day. The day was just all about you.
Now, it’s understandable why I would love my birthday as a kid, but would those memories continue to influence my feelings about birthdays into my mature years? Yes and no. I love that our family celebrated each and every birthday with great aplomb. We all sat up a little taller on our birthdays! But, I think it might be something more.
If you’ve ever seen the NOVA program “Life’s Greatest Miracle”, you know what the odds are that you were even born. Simply existing, being here on Earth, is truly a miracle. Every minute of every day that we are on Earth should be a celebration. But, most of all, celebrate the day you were born. Celebrate what a gift you were to your parents and family. Celebrate all the hope that your little bundle of joy possessed. Celebrate the moments you brought your family together for some laughs, and tears, and created memories to last a lifetime. Give yourself a gift of celebration on your next birthday.

You are most welcome, Pixie! I’m so glad you’re going to celebrate your upcoming Birthday this year instead of just adding another candle to the cake. And I know you can celebrate with the best of ’em! Good for you!
