America Of The 60’s
Posted on Wednesday, November 5th, 2008
Remember the 60’s? If you’re reading this, you probably do. I have not seen people in this Country rise up with such fervor since the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement. It should give all Americans a feeling of hope to think that our citizens have, once again, found something to believe in and have gotten behind a cause and spoken out. No matter which candidate won your vote, the miracle of this election is the sheer number of voters, both young and old, that found their voice once again and exercised their right to vote.
I saw both men speak last night with such eloquence it made me a little weepy. It also made me a bit angry that we didn’t see more of that during the campaigns. I don’t think the “anything goes” attitude that seems to take over campaigns should be accepted, and I believe most people in this Country would agree with me on that.
I was, however, disturbed by something during one of the speeches. It made me very angry and shocked to hear booing at the mention of our new President’s name. I thought, in this Country, we are supposed to show respect for the President in office, no matter what our own affiliation is. At least, that’s what I was told. You can disagree with the President on every issue, but to publicly disrespect the President of The United States by booing him? A few jabs taken with humor is no problem, in my opinion. Who doesn’t laugh at Saturday Night Live routines poking fun at political figures? Political satire is part of our history, and should be. But booing? Where do these people come from? I just don’t get it.
So, we have a new President. The next four years will be something incredible to watch, both for Americans and the World. I’m excited to see what changes unfold ahead of us and look forward to this new 60’s attitude.
