<p>If you&#8217;ve been following my <strong>fit after 50 </strong>series, you&#8217;ll notice I&#8217;ve had some &#8220;fits and starts.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000I1GQ04/remarkwrinkl-20" target="_blank"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-2195" title="exercise picture old bw websize" src="http://remarkablewrinklies.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/exercise-picture-old-bw-websize3.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="162" /></a><strong>Women over 50</strong> have a special relationship with exercise.</p>
<p>Even though I&#8217;ve been able to develop a great exercise program around <a href="http://fatlossadvantage.com/go.php?offer=wrinklies&amp;pid=3" target="_blank">Scott&#8217;s FatLossQuickie fitness program</a>, I found that doing one form of exercise every day wasn&#8217;t going to work for me.</p>
<p>Even though I am dedicated to some sort of fitness program for the rest of my life, I have begun to see routine exercise, any routine exercise, as a choice of something fun to do every day.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m inspired by my sister and brother-in-law who, as they sit and have their coffee in the morning, inquire of each other &#8220;what are you doing for exercise today?&#8221;</p>
<p>That is what I have learned during these last 30 days &#8211; exercise is nothing if not something to enjoy every single day.</p>
<p>I enjoy doing <a href="http://fatlossadvantage.com/go.php?offer=wrinklies&amp;pid=3" target="_blank">Scott&#8217;s FatLossQuickie fitness program</a>.  I love that I went from doing 3 leg extensions on the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000FH2W4A/remarkwrinkl-20" target="_blank">floor ball</a> when I started to doing 30 leg extensions.  I was ready to give up on those when I started!</p>
<p>I love that I went from using 2 pound weights to using 8 pound weights for most of my weight bearing exercises.</p>
<p><a href="http://fatlossadvantage.com/go.php?offer=wrinklies&amp;pid=3" target="_blank">Scott&#8217;s FatLossQuickie fitness program</a> was the routine, strategic exercise program I needed to build strength and flexibility at a measurable rate.</p>
<p>But, I also loved that I took time to walk the beach and ride my bike.  My exercise program can&#8217;t be limited to increasing weight and building reps.  My exercise program has to include things that take me outside of my body.</p>
<p>So, what did I learn about <strong>fitness after 50</strong> during the last month?</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Do some exercise every day.</strong> No matter what it is, do some form of exercise every single day.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Do something for fun every day.</strong> Even if you enjoy lifting weights, change the scenery.  Go outside, walk, ride a bike, go to the beach, go to a playground, dance&#8230; whatever you do that will make you smile, do that thing!</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Don&#8217;t weigh yourself.</strong> Scales are fickle.  A pound here and a pound there really doesn&#8217;t matter much.  Lose a few and rejoice;  gain a few and cry.  Do you really want to have your emotions ruled by a pound or two?  I know I&#8217;ve lived way too long to be pulled this way and that by some stupid scale.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Don&#8217;t listen to studies.</strong> Especially those studies that say women over 50 can&#8217;t lose weight without uber-exercise.  That&#8217;s just foolish.  I know too many women my age who have lost weight with regular exercise at a rate that fits into their lives.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Do eat a healthy diet.</strong> I really really really had to give up some things I love in order to lose weight.  Massive amounts of pasta three or four times a week just won&#8217;t work.  Lots of vegetables, lean protein, and no sugar&#8230; that&#8217;s the plan.  Yes, I confess, wine is my favorite vice.  Why do you think I exercise so much?</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Do take a break.</strong> Okay, when I go on vacation, I indulge &#8211; a lot.  I am, after all, on vacation.  I slack off both exercise-wise and diet-wise.  This is to be expected and may even be a kick to the metabolism.  Who knows.  Anyway, enjoy.  When you&#8217;re over 50 you look at these things differently, I guess.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Do surround yourself with positive people.</strong> When you&#8217;re trying to improve your overall health, the greatest gift you can give yourself is positive people;  people who are truly interested in doing things that improve your joy of life.  Hang out with friends and family that make you laugh.</li>
</ul>
<p>There is so much more to fitness than exercise.  When you&#8217;re over 50, this truth becomes so dang clear!  Exercise alone will not give you total health and fitness, but your overall health and fitness will depend on your commitment to maintaining a healthy and happy lifestyle.</p>
<p>If that sounds like a lot of double talk, it is.  Hey, who said it was easy getting old?!  Exercise, eat right, have fun, stay fit, be positive, and don&#8217;t let anyone tell you that you can&#8217;t do something you want to do!  I&#8217;m looking forward to many more years of doing whatever I dang well please!  How &#8217;bout you?</p>

<h2><span style="color: #000000;">Okay, we may be down, but we&#8217;re not out.<br />

<p><a href="http://www.fatlossquickie.com/home-workouts.php" target="_blank"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-2195" title="exercise picture old bw websize" src="http://remarkablewrinklies.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/exercise-picture-old-bw-websize3.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="162" /></a>We all heard about <strong>the new AMA study</strong> right?  This is the study that found it&#8217;s impossible for <strong>women over 50 who have gained weight</strong> during the <strong>perimenopause</strong> and <strong>menopause</strong> years to lose weight.  We can never, ever exercise the weight off.</p>
<p>The study shows that <strong>women over 50</strong> who just want to MAINTAIN their weight have to exercise 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m still wondering exactly what exercises these women in the study were doing.  I know I lost weight by doing <a href="http://fatlossadvantage.com/go.php?offer=wrinklies&amp;pid=3" target="_blank">Scott&#8217;s FatLossQuickie fitness program</a>, exercising with weights, doing  10 minutes twice a day, 5 days a week.  However, I did this exercise along with riding my bike when I could and walking, also.</p>
<p>PLUS, I have been eating a diet that consists of oatmeal, flax meal, soy milk, nuts, green tea, vegetables, brown and wild rice, beans, chicken, and seafood.</p>
<p>And, yes, this woman is not easily separated from her wine.  So, there&#8217;s my vice &#8211; but come on!  No ice cream, no cookies, no chips, hardly any meat, no bread&#8230;</p>
<p>Will this <strong>woman over 50</strong> lose weight?  Damn straight I will!</p>
<p>Will I see it melt off in a weekend, week, or even a month?  Probably not.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s where the baby steps come in.</p>
<p>When I started doing <a href="http://fatlossadvantage.com/go.php?offer=wrinklies&amp;pid=3" target="_blank">Scott&#8217;s FatLossQuickie fitness program</a>, I had trouble with most of the exercises.  Now, instead of doing 3 leg extensions on my <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000FH2W4A/remarkwrinkl-20" target="_blank">floor ball</a>, I do 30.</p>
<p>For now, I will continue to strengthen my body and not be too concerned about losing weight.  Baby steps.</p>
<p>Then, as the months roll along, I intend to prove that a woman over 50 CAN lose weight.</p>
<p>When we hear all those promises of &#8220;just 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week&#8221; we know that sounds too good to be true.  Well, now we have the study to prove it.  I believe that taking an hour long walk every day won&#8217;t help a woman over 50 lose weight &#8211; that is if she is still eating like she did when she was 20, 30, or even 40.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h2><span style="color: #000000;">It&#8217;s impossible for women over 50 to lose weight with exercise alone.</span></h2>
<p>Oh boy.  Who saw <strong>the new AMA study</strong> today?  It&#8217;s  hopeless.  <strong>Women over 50 who have gained weight</strong> during, say, those pesky <strong>perimenopause</strong> and <strong>menopause</strong> years, will never realistically be able to exercise it off again.  Ever.</p>
<p>The study shows that <strong>women over 50</strong> who just want to MAINTAIN their weight have to exercise 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week.</p>
<p>Come on!  What&#8217;s the standard, widely accepted belief about exercise?  What do we see in all the magazines and infomercials:   &#8220;Do __________ 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week, and lose that weight!&#8221;  Baloney.</p>
<p>This study is irritating some women while affirming the beliefs of other women.  It does explain why so many women go out on their 30 minute walk, 3 days a week, and never lose a pound.</p>
<p>So, how can we be the exception to the findings of this study?  First, take a look at the highlights from the study.</p>
<p><strong>1) Women over 50</strong> who have gained weight had a very slim chance of losing the weight with exercise.   However, women over 50 who were at a healthy weight had a good chance of maintaining their healthy weight with exercise.</p>
<p><strong>2) Women over 50</strong> must exercise 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week in order to maintain their weight.  So, if you are overweight right now and start exercising to this extent, you will maintain your &#8220;overweightness?&#8221;  How sad.</p>
<p><strong>3) Women over 50</strong> who exercise 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week while eating a proper, calorie reducing, nutritious diet will lose weight.</p>
<p>Where does this leave us?  Back to the same old routine, that&#8217;s where.  Diet and exercise.</p>
<p>Losing weight has never, ever been about exercise alone &#8211; even extreme exercise.  Losing weight depends on a combination of exercise and diet.  The exercise must contain both aerobic (that&#8217;s the heart pounding stuff) and resistance (that&#8217;s the muscle and bone stuff) exercises PLUS changing your diet from fat-and-sugar-filled to nutrient filled.</p>
<p>Empty calories still produce fat in your body even if you&#8217;re exercising 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week.  When our metabolism slows down, most notably for women when we hit 50 ish, we have to improve our diet in order to lose weight.</p>
<p>The study really is not telling us anything we don&#8217;t already know in the back of our minds somewhere.  Yes, when we hear all those promises of &#8220;just 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week&#8221; we know that sounds too good to be true.  Well, now we have the study to prove it.</p>
<p>Even though I have chosen <a href="http://fatlossadvantage.com/go.php?offer=wrinklies&amp;pid=3" target="_blank">Scott Tousignant&#8217;s  FatLossQuickie fitness program</a> which is 10 minutes twice a day, I know that adding my 5 mile walk or 12 mile bike ride, along with eating a healthy diet, is important for my fitness, and my sanity.</p>

<p>Thanks to my beloved Cousin, OSS (that&#8217;s another story) I have the perfect fun to share with you ladies!  (Sorry guys.  This will probably just give you that familiar puzzled expression.)</p>
<p>Get ready to have some girlie giggles, then we&#8217;ll get back to our exercising tomorrow.  Enjoy these 13 little snippets from the life and times of many of us women.</p>

Especially when they say things like&#8230;&#8217;You know sometimes I forget to eat!&#8217;&#8230;Now I&#8217;ve forgotten my address, my mother&#8217;s maiden name and my keys, but I have never forgotten to eat. You have to be a special kind of stupid to forget to eat!</p>
<p>12.. The trouble with some women is that they get all excited about nothing and then they marry him. =)</p>
<p>13. I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are eating too much, impulse buying, and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That&#8217;s my idea of a Wondermous day!</p>

<h2><span style="color: #000000;">Fitness after 50 may require tweaking an exercise routine for injuries, illness, and general body condition concerns.<br />

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;"> </span>I&#8217;ve talked to many people my age and older who say to me &#8220;But, I have bad knees.  I can&#8217;t do those exercises you&#8217;re doing.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">And, they may be right, at first.  Powering through painful exercise moves is a lot of rot.  When you&#8217;re working at a fitness program over the age of 50 or so, you have to listen to your pain and go slowly.  The wear and tear you&#8217;re feeling could be real signs of injury, and you don&#8217;t walk off an injury.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Some folks my age and older have had joint problems that have required surgery and medication.  You can&#8217;t tell these folks to keep doing an exercise that hurts them.  A person must be smart about their body and what it will take.</span></p>

<p>When I asked my friend <a href="http://fatlossadvantage.com/go.php?offer=wrinklies&amp;pid=3" target="_blank">Scott Tousignant of FatLossQuickie.com</a> that question he said &#8220;Where do I begin?&#8221;   It depends on so many variables.   In other words, there are no simple answers.</p>
<p>So, I thought rather than try to translate his thought into my own writing, why not just ask the expert?</p>
<p>Therefore, without further ado, I introduce a REAL honest-to-goodness fitness expert&#8230; my friend, Scott Tousignant.    Click on and enjoy!</p>

<p>Scott was also good enough to expound on his video clip with this additional information with real examples of his actual clients who are living remarkable lives well into their 80&#8242;s!</p>
<p>Won&#8217;t you read what Scott shared with me?</p>
<p>Patti -<em> &#8220;How does a fitness program for someone in their 20&#8242;s differ from someone over 50?&#8221;</em></p>
<p>Scott &#8211; <em>&#8220;The main difference is in the goals and reasons why you are participating in a fitness program. In your 20&#8242;s the main goal was to look great so you can attract a mate. Young guys want to work on their beach muscles such as their chest and arms and young women want to look good in a bikini.</em></p>
<p><em>In your 50&#8242;s you&#8217;re probably not thinking too much about fitting into a bikini, although that may still be a goal for you, which is absolutely awesome!</em></p>
<p><em>Chances are much greater that you want to participate in a fitness program so you can enjoy a great quality of life during what is supposed to be the best years of your life. You exercise as a preventative measure to ward off heart disease and cancer. You exercise to help manage menopausal symptoms. And you exercise because you want to keep up with your grandchildren.</em></p>
<p><em>Because your goals are different, your fitness program should be different. But it&#8217;s not drastically different. You don&#8217;t need to spend your senior years lifting only soup cans as your doctor may prescribe. You still need to challenge yourself.</em></p>
<p><em>You&#8217;re still going to want to incorporate the key ingredients of a successful fitness program, which includes; Resistance training, aerobic training, and flexibility training. But the way that you perform these key factors will depend on your goals and current level of fitness.</em></p>
<p><em>It&#8217;s not so much a factor of age as it is your goals and current fitness level. There are people in their 50&#8242;s who can barely get around, yet there are people in their 80&#8242;s and 90&#8242;s who can perform tasks better than people in their 40&#8242;s. My 89 year old personal training client puts some 20 year olds to shame with some of the workouts that I put him through.</em></p>
<p><em>I also train an 87 year old woman who was active in the pool, but had never performed any resistance training. Her goal was to improve her strength, balance, and quality of life. There are some exercises that are difficult for her, but there are others that absolutely surprise her that she&#8217;s capable of doing.</em></p>
<p><em>I do have my 89 year old client performing many of the same exercises as some of my 20 year old clients. The only difference is that he reduces the intensity a bit. That&#8217;s the main difference&#8230; the intensity. He simply takes a slightly longer rest period and we may substitute a couple exercises. Doing burpees are not on his priority list <img src='http://remarkablewrinklies.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /> </em></p>

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">Unfortunately, it doesn&#8217;t work that way.  We have seen too many people suffer from lack of exercise and eating the wrong foods.  And not just suffer physically, but emotionally, as well.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">My good friend <a href="http://fatlossquickie.com/blog/having-a-powerful-why-is-not-enough/" target="_blank">Scott Tousignant of the Fat Loss Quickie fitness program</a> has an interesting take on the &#8220;Why&#8221; of our fitness goals.  Sure, we may want to get into our skinny jeans again, but what REALLY motivates a person to get fit?  Visualizing our skinny selves appears to be a motivation that has a hiccup in it &#8211; we don&#8217;t really believe it will happen. </span></span></p>

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">So, what about seeing ourselves in the future as our <strong>motivation to get fit</strong>?  Not our skinny jeans, but us.  What are we doing with our grandkids?  Are we sitting on the sofa being waited on because we can&#8217;t get up so good anymore?  Or are we swimming, shooting buckets, playing tag, and getting up and down just as easily as we please?<br />

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">Maybe we&#8217;re a little disappointed because we&#8217;re not as agile as we once were.  Or, maybe we&#8217;re very disappointed because we aren&#8217;t healthy anymore and have to miss out on some of our children&#8217;s and grandchildren&#8217;s events. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">Or, worse.  Maybe we&#8217;re not around anymore to see our family grow.<br />
</span></span></p>
<h3>Why do you really want to get fit?  What is your motivation?</h3>
<p>If your motivation is to fit into a skinny pair of jeans, then I&#8217;m suggesting that your fitness program is doomed right from the start.  You need to search a little deeper and <strong>root out the real EMOTION behind the desire to get fit</strong>.</p>
<p>Write down your REAL motivation and look at it.  I&#8217;ll bet all the skinny jeans in the world don&#8217;t compare to what you&#8217;ve written down.</p>
<p>I know being around and available to my grandkids and the rest of my wonderful, crazy family is the motivation I need to keep exercising.  I know when I choose oatmeal over bacon, sit ups over television, I&#8217;m making a life-affirming choice.</p>
<p>I hope you&#8217;ll join me and find your motivation &#8211; your own &#8220;Why&#8221; -  and start an exercise program that works for you.  Doing some form of exercise every day and eating right just may keep you fit and on this earth long enough to enjoy those people who motivate you!</p>

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">What came first, the chicken or the egg?  Who knows. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">But, one thing I do know is that without being physically strong, <strong>life after 50</strong> is a lot more difficult and oftentimes sad.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">We&#8217;ve all either been there or know somebody who has.  The years are unkind, the weight starts to pile on, exercise gets more difficult, and the gradual decline begins.  This might happen early in someone&#8217;s life;  it might happen later.  Either way, the inevitable disappointment begins.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">Disappointment that we can&#8217;t take a bike ride with our family and friends.  Perhaps we can&#8217;t get in a canoe, or worse yet, out of a canoe.  Maybe it&#8217;s just a little pile of little disappointments, but they start to become a big pile over time.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">One of my great joys is riding my bike.  I go over to my daughter&#8217;s house and we hop on our bikes and pedal around on a nice little road.  We sometimes load up our bikes and ride at the beach or on a trail not too far from us.  We always have a great time, and the exercise is wonderful!</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;"><a href="http://remarkablewrinklies.com/2010/anne-marie-and-al-rv-adventures-pensacola/" target="_blank"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1887" title="Pcola Patti in snow" src="http://remarkablewrinklies.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Pcola-Patti-in-snow.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="150" /></a>Not all our bike rides are easy.  This is a picture that my friend Anne-Marie took of me during one such ride.<br />

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">It was a beautiful, sunshiny day and we were on a wonderful bike ride along the beach.  However, the riding was made a bit more difficult by Hurricane Ida and her remnants.<br />
</span></span></p>

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">The sign you see there in front of the plow says &#8220;bike path.&#8221; </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">That was NOT an easy ride.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">And that&#8217;s my point.  A couple years ago, I would not have been able to make that ride.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">But, because I have been exercising, walking, and riding my bike, I could enjoy the company of my daughter and friends on a wonderful, long, and somewhat difficult bike ride.  With the sand on the road and the roar of the surf in our ears, we were off having a great time!<br />
</span></span></p>

<h2><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">So How Does A Woman Over 50 Keep Fit Without Watching Her Diet?</span></span></h2>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>The answer is &#8211; she doesn&#8217;t.</strong><br />
</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">I&#8217;m not saying that everyone has to &#8220;go on a diet&#8221; in order to <strong>stay trim and fit after 50</strong>.  But, it&#8217;s been my experience, and my observation, that watching what you eat and drink makes a big difference in how well your exercise program works.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>After the age of 50</strong>, our metabolism starts to really slow down.  It&#8217;s no longer easy to take the weight off, and it&#8217;s doubly hard to keep it off.  And, with additional weight on our body we aren&#8217;t as agile, which means our movements slow down and we don&#8217;t get as much physical exercise as we used to.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">What&#8217;s the solution?  Diet.  Not &#8220;a diet&#8221;&#8230; just diet. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">For many people, going on a diet is like death itself.  Having to deny yourself the food you love is just not fun.  Nor is it what we signed on for when we got to the &#8220;golden years.&#8221;  So, how do we approach our battle with weight gain after 50?<br />

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000068WS7/remarkwrinkl-20" target="_blank">Johnny Carson</a> had one of the best solutions I can recall for people to maintain a healthy weight as they got older.  His method was to give up one fattening food every year after you reach a certain age. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">For instance, I like ice cream, but I don&#8217;t LOVE ice cream.  I can pass on ice cream MOST of the time.  When I was in my twenties I ate ice cream every night.  Now, I have a scoop once in a <a href="http://www.cedarcresticecream.com/products_blue_moon.html" target="_blank">Blue Moon</a>, which happens to be one of my favorite flavors.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">So, how do you plan to improve your diet?  Here&#8217;s what I&#8217;m doing.  It&#8217;s not complicated, just a few new choices:<br />

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">I choose a salad over mashed potatoes and gravy.  I choose a veggie wrap over a hamburger.  I choose green tea over a soda.  I choose roasted veggies over french fries.  I choose fish over red meat.  I choose raw over cooked.  I choose steamed over microwaved.  I choose fresh over packaged.<br />

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">Am I giving up everything that isn&#8217;t healthy?  No.  Am I choosing healthier foods over sugary fat foods?  Yes&#8230;  for the most part.  However&#8230;<br />

<li><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">When I&#8217;m traveling, I will try the dessert.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">When I&#8217;m relaxing with friends and family, I will try the wine.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">When I&#8217;m in my routine, I will choose to eat whole, healthy foods.</span></span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">Am I on a diet?  No, not really.  I know what works for me, food-wise, and what doesn&#8217;t.<br />
</span></span></p>
