<p>Perhaps you know about the <strong>Dove Evolution Campaign</strong>.  If not, it&#8217;s a campaign that started a while back to show us, especially our daughters and sons, what real people look like before the make up, hair, and photoshop gets a hold of them.</p>
<p>I stumbled upon this video, and the campaign, through a great blog called <a href="http://emptynestfulllife.typepad.com/emptynest_full_life/2009/08/for-our-sons-our-daughters-and-ourselves.html" target="_blank">Hummingbird Mind</a> .  Her &#8220;Empty Nest &#8211; Full Life&#8221; credo rings true with me.  She has taken her empty nest and filled it with her passion for living.</p>
<p>Because she has raised daughters, she has affinity for the struggles that every mother has with her daughters;  especially when it comes to their self-esteem.</p>
<p>When a mother hears a tear-soaked cry from her daughter proclaiming she&#8217;s not pretty enough, it&#8217;s a cruel reminder of what our society is doing to us.  It tugs at our hearts and infuriates us at the same time.  How can my beautiful daughter or granddaughter see herself that way?</p>
<p>Well, here&#8217;s the answer.</p>

Show this video to your daughters, your sons, and anyone else who thinks they know what real beauty is when they see a fashion magazine or billboard.</p>
<p>Granted, I wouldn&#8217;t mind a bit of photoshopping on my own ol&#8217; lady face and figure, but it&#8217;s not reality.  And happiness starts with reality and acceptance &#8211; especially when we&#8217;re young and just forming our opinions of ourselves and our bodies.</p>
<p>The next time you hear a young girl or boy complain about their appearance, show them this video.  Let them know that what they are comparing their body to is a cartoon drawing with no basis in reality.  They may as well compare themselves to Daffy Duck&#8230; or Barbie.</p>
<p>Back to Barbie&#8230; I thought we&#8217;d learned that lesson back in the 60&#8242;s.  I guess not.  We are still sold the &#8220;body beautiful&#8221; in plastic, silicone,  and photoshopped images.</p>
<p>Will there ever be a time when we are NOT told we&#8217;ll be happy if we are just ________ enough?</p>

<p>Okay, that&#8217;s a good question.  Will you have success in any one of these areas without practicing them all?</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve all been, or know someone who has been on a diet which consists of some magic pills, canned drink, or other food fad.  What happens?  Do you lose the weight?  Maybe.  Do you keep it off?  Never.  And why?  Because the other two elements may be missing &#8211; nutrition and exercise.</p>
<p>If you diet without nutrition in mind, your health could be at risk.  If you exercise without proper nutrition, your health could be at risk.  It appears that the only way to have a healthy body is to combine nutrition and exercise.</p>
<p>According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), when we talk about weight loss, we have to talk about not only dietary changes, but HEALTHY dietary changes along with regular physical activity.  The CDC states &#8221; The key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight isn&#8217;t about short-term dietary changes.  It&#8217;s about a lifestyle that includes healthy eating, regular physical activity, and balancing the number of calories you consume with the number of calories your body uses.&#8221;</p>
<p>At our age we should know that maintaining a healthy weight is not all about looking good in our jeans.  It&#8217;s about good health now and as we age.  As my sister the runner says, &#8220;We are creating the bodies we&#8217;ll take into our old age.&#8221;</p>
<p>Most of us will try to lose weight by decreasing our caloric intake.  That will work at first, but evidence shows the only way to maintain that weight loss is to exercise regularly.  There you go &#8211; health, nutrition, and exercise &#8211; together again.</p>
<p>The CDC also states that along with maintaining our healthy weight, physical activity done regularly helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes beyond the benefits you get from the weight loss alone.</p>
<p>So, yes, it&#8217;s important to lose weight, but losing weight alone won&#8217;t give you the healthy body you need.  A regular exercise program that includes strength training, combined with a nutritious diet, will be the ticket to a healthy life.</p>
<p>Most people of a certain age see a few pounds start creeping up year after year.  Many people don&#8217;t realize just how many pounds they have added over the course of some years because it&#8217;s a pound one year, then two pounds the next, and so on.</p>
<p>Start by asking yourself the hard questions.  Are you overweight?  Is your weight causing you health problems?  Are you exercising and not losing any weight?  Are you dieting and not losing weight?  If this sounds like you, consider what the CDC has to say about the necessity of combining nutrition with exercise in order to become healthy.</p>
<p>If you are curious about your own weight and how it is affecting your health, check out your BMI (body mass index) with this calculator provided by the CDC.  Once you know, the rest is up to you.  Start a fitness program today that includes nutrition and exercise together to improve your health now and for the future.<br />

<p><span style="color: #000000;">Even though my pills consist mostly of (knock wood) vitamins and one allergy pill, I still like to be sure I take them every morning.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Well, the ritual became a bit tedious, and yes, I forgot sometimes, staring at the bottles, wondering, wondering, wondering&#8230; did I take my pills this morning or didn&#8217;t I?</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"> So, I succumbed and bought myself a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000537JQ/remarkwrinkl-20" target="_blank">weekly pill dispenser</a>.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Why the hesitation?  Memories and resistance.  My Dad had a pill organizer when he got older &#8211; key words:  &#8220;when he got older.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Resistance is futile.  We will be assimilated.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Aging is inevitable, if we&#8217;re lucky.  Having a pill organizer is a reminder that we&#8217;re getting older and a bit forgetful.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"> But, missing your vitamins and medications is a bad thing.  So, I sit down and fill my little pill dispenser thingy every week.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Now each morning I pop open my dispenser, take my handful of vitamins and medicine, and check to see what day it is.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">I&#8217;ve kind of grown to like this ritual.  Maybe in a few years I&#8217;ll graduate to the month-at-a-time pill organizers and take the calender off my kitchen wall.</span></p>

<p>If you&#8217;ve been following my <strong>fit after 50 </strong>series, you&#8217;ll notice I&#8217;ve had some &#8220;fits and starts.&#8221;</p>

<p>Even though I&#8217;ve been able to develop a great exercise program around <a href="http://fatlossadvantage.com/go.php?offer=wrinklies&amp;pid=3" target="_blank">Scott&#8217;s FatLossQuickie fitness program</a>, I found that doing one form of exercise every day wasn&#8217;t going to work for me.</p>
<p>Even though I am dedicated to some sort of fitness program for the rest of my life, I have begun to see routine exercise, any routine exercise, as a choice of something fun to do every day.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m inspired by my sister and brother-in-law who, as they sit and have their coffee in the morning, inquire of each other &#8220;what are you doing for exercise today?&#8221;</p>
<p>That is what I have learned during these last 30 days &#8211; exercise is nothing if not something to enjoy every single day.</p>
<p>I enjoy doing <a href="http://fatlossadvantage.com/go.php?offer=wrinklies&amp;pid=3" target="_blank">Scott&#8217;s FatLossQuickie fitness program</a>.  I love that I went from doing 3 leg extensions on the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000FH2W4A/remarkwrinkl-20" target="_blank">floor ball</a> when I started to doing 30 leg extensions.  I was ready to give up on those when I started!</p>
<p>I love that I went from using 2 pound weights to using 8 pound weights for most of my weight bearing exercises.</p>

<p>So, what did I learn about <strong>fitness after 50</strong> during the last month?</p>

<li><strong>Do some exercise every day.</strong> No matter what it is, do some form of exercise every single day.</li>

<li><strong>Do something for fun every day.</strong> Even if you enjoy lifting weights, change the scenery.  Go outside, walk, ride a bike, go to the beach, go to a playground, dance&#8230; whatever you do that will make you smile, do that thing!</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Don&#8217;t weigh yourself.</strong> Scales are fickle.  A pound here and a pound there really doesn&#8217;t matter much.  Lose a few and rejoice;  gain a few and cry.  Do you really want to have your emotions ruled by a pound or two?  I know I&#8217;ve lived way too long to be pulled this way and that by some stupid scale.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Don&#8217;t listen to studies.</strong> Especially those studies that say women over 50 can&#8217;t lose weight without uber-exercise.  That&#8217;s just foolish.  I know too many women my age who have lost weight with regular exercise at a rate that fits into their lives.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Do eat a healthy diet.</strong> I really really really had to give up some things I love in order to lose weight.  Massive amounts of pasta three or four times a week just won&#8217;t work.  Lots of vegetables, lean protein, and no sugar&#8230; that&#8217;s the plan.  Yes, I confess, wine is my favorite vice.  Why do you think I exercise so much?</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Do take a break.</strong> Okay, when I go on vacation, I indulge &#8211; a lot.  I am, after all, on vacation.  I slack off both exercise-wise and diet-wise.  This is to be expected and may even be a kick to the metabolism.  Who knows.  Anyway, enjoy.  When you&#8217;re over 50 you look at these things differently, I guess.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Do surround yourself with positive people.</strong> When you&#8217;re trying to improve your overall health, the greatest gift you can give yourself is positive people;  people who are truly interested in doing things that improve your joy of life.  Hang out with friends and family that make you laugh.</li>
</ul>
<p>There is so much more to fitness than exercise.  When you&#8217;re over 50, this truth becomes so dang clear!  Exercise alone will not give you total health and fitness, but your overall health and fitness will depend on your commitment to maintaining a healthy and happy lifestyle.</p>
<p>If that sounds like a lot of double talk, it is.  Hey, who said it was easy getting old?!  Exercise, eat right, have fun, stay fit, be positive, and don&#8217;t let anyone tell you that you can&#8217;t do something you want to do!  I&#8217;m looking forward to many more years of doing whatever I dang well please!  How &#8217;bout you?</p>

<p><a href="http://www.fatlossquickie.com/home-workouts.php" target="_blank"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-2195" title="exercise picture old bw websize" src="http://remarkablewrinklies.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/exercise-picture-old-bw-websize3.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="162" /></a>We all heard about <strong>the new AMA study</strong> right?  This is the study that found it&#8217;s impossible for <strong>women over 50 who have gained weight</strong> during the <strong>perimenopause</strong> and <strong>menopause</strong> years to lose weight.  We can never, ever exercise the weight off.</p>
<p>The study shows that <strong>women over 50</strong> who just want to MAINTAIN their weight have to exercise 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m still wondering exactly what exercises these women in the study were doing.  I know I lost weight by doing <a href="http://fatlossadvantage.com/go.php?offer=wrinklies&amp;pid=3" target="_blank">Scott&#8217;s FatLossQuickie fitness program</a>, exercising with weights, doing  10 minutes twice a day, 5 days a week.  However, I did this exercise along with riding my bike when I could and walking, also.</p>
<p>PLUS, I have been eating a diet that consists of oatmeal, flax meal, soy milk, nuts, green tea, vegetables, brown and wild rice, beans, chicken, and seafood.</p>
<p>And, yes, this woman is not easily separated from her wine.  So, there&#8217;s my vice &#8211; but come on!  No ice cream, no cookies, no chips, hardly any meat, no bread&#8230;</p>
<p>Will this <strong>woman over 50</strong> lose weight?  Damn straight I will!</p>
<p>Will I see it melt off in a weekend, week, or even a month?  Probably not.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s where the baby steps come in.</p>
<p>When I started doing <a href="http://fatlossadvantage.com/go.php?offer=wrinklies&amp;pid=3" target="_blank">Scott&#8217;s FatLossQuickie fitness program</a>, I had trouble with most of the exercises.  Now, instead of doing 3 leg extensions on my <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000FH2W4A/remarkwrinkl-20" target="_blank">floor ball</a>, I do 30.</p>
<p>For now, I will continue to strengthen my body and not be too concerned about losing weight.  Baby steps.</p>
<p>Then, as the months roll along, I intend to prove that a woman over 50 CAN lose weight.</p>
<p>When we hear all those promises of &#8220;just 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week&#8221; we know that sounds too good to be true.  Well, now we have the study to prove it.  I believe that taking an hour long walk every day won&#8217;t help a woman over 50 lose weight &#8211; that is if she is still eating like she did when she was 20, 30, or even 40.</p>

<p>Oh boy.  Who saw <strong>the new AMA study</strong> today?  It&#8217;s  hopeless.  <strong>Women over 50 who have gained weight</strong> during, say, those pesky <strong>perimenopause</strong> and <strong>menopause</strong> years, will never realistically be able to exercise it off again.  Ever.</p>
<p>The study shows that <strong>women over 50</strong> who just want to MAINTAIN their weight have to exercise 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week.</p>
<p>Come on!  What&#8217;s the standard, widely accepted belief about exercise?  What do we see in all the magazines and infomercials:   &#8220;Do __________ 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week, and lose that weight!&#8221;  Baloney.</p>
<p>This study is irritating some women while affirming the beliefs of other women.  It does explain why so many women go out on their 30 minute walk, 3 days a week, and never lose a pound.</p>
<p>So, how can we be the exception to the findings of this study?  First, take a look at the highlights from the study.</p>
<p><strong>1) Women over 50</strong> who have gained weight had a very slim chance of losing the weight with exercise.   However, women over 50 who were at a healthy weight had a good chance of maintaining their healthy weight with exercise.</p>
<p><strong>2) Women over 50</strong> must exercise 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week in order to maintain their weight.  So, if you are overweight right now and start exercising to this extent, you will maintain your &#8220;overweightness?&#8221;  How sad.</p>
<p><strong>3) Women over 50</strong> who exercise 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week while eating a proper, calorie reducing, nutritious diet will lose weight.</p>
<p>Where does this leave us?  Back to the same old routine, that&#8217;s where.  Diet and exercise.</p>
<p>Losing weight has never, ever been about exercise alone &#8211; even extreme exercise.  Losing weight depends on a combination of exercise and diet.  The exercise must contain both aerobic (that&#8217;s the heart pounding stuff) and resistance (that&#8217;s the muscle and bone stuff) exercises PLUS changing your diet from fat-and-sugar-filled to nutrient filled.</p>
<p>Empty calories still produce fat in your body even if you&#8217;re exercising 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week.  When our metabolism slows down, most notably for women when we hit 50 ish, we have to improve our diet in order to lose weight.</p>
<p>The study really is not telling us anything we don&#8217;t already know in the back of our minds somewhere.  Yes, when we hear all those promises of &#8220;just 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week&#8221; we know that sounds too good to be true.  Well, now we have the study to prove it.</p>

<p>Thanks to my beloved Cousin, OSS (that&#8217;s another story) I have the perfect fun to share with you ladies!  (Sorry guys.  This will probably just give you that familiar puzzled expression.)</p>
<p>Get ready to have some girlie giggles, then we&#8217;ll get back to our exercising tomorrow.  Enjoy these 13 little snippets from the life and times of many of us women.</p>

<p>2. One of life&#8217;s mysteries is how a 2-pound box of chocolates can make a woman gain 5 lbs.</p>
<p>3. My mind not only wanders, it sometimes leaves completely.</p>
<p>4. The best way to forget your troubles is to wear tight shoes.</p>
<p>5. The nice part about living in a small town is that when you don&#8217;t know what you are doing, someone else does.</p>
<p>6. The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight because by then, your body and your fat are really good friends.</p>

<p>10. Amazing! You hang something in your closet for a while and it shrinks 2 sizes!</p>
<p>11. Skinny people irritate me! Especially when they say things like&#8230;&#8217;You know sometimes I forget to eat!&#8217;&#8230;Now I&#8217;ve forgotten my address, my mother&#8217;s maiden name and my keys, but I have never forgotten to eat. You have to be a special kind of stupid to forget to eat!</p>
<p>12.. The trouble with some women is that they get all excited about nothing and then they marry him. =)</p>
<p>13. I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are eating too much, impulse buying, and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That&#8217;s my idea of a Wondermous day!</p>

<h2><span style="color: #000000;">Fitness after 50 may require tweaking an exercise routine for injuries, illness, and general body condition concerns.<br />

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;"> </span>I&#8217;ve talked to many people my age and older who say to me &#8220;But, I have bad knees.  I can&#8217;t do those exercises you&#8217;re doing.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">And, they may be right, at first.  Powering through painful exercise moves is a lot of rot.  When you&#8217;re working at a fitness program over the age of 50 or so, you have to listen to your pain and go slowly.  The wear and tear you&#8217;re feeling could be real signs of injury, and you don&#8217;t walk off an injury.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Some folks my age and older have had joint problems that have required surgery and medication.  You can&#8217;t tell these folks to keep doing an exercise that hurts them.  A person must be smart about their body and what it will take.</span></p>
<h2><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">That&#8217;s where alternative exercises for bad knees comes in.</span><br />

<p><span style="color: #000000;">Doing exercises that strengthen the areas of your body that are weakened, either by injury or wear and tear, is important to your overall well-being.  So, finding exercises that you can do to slowly build up your strength without causing pain or more injury is important.<br />

<p><span style="color: #000000;">Your knees may need special care, but oftentimes with the right exercise, you will strengthen and improve the condition of your knees &#8211; and your general fitness. </span></p>
