Lessons From Mom – Things I Learned To Appreciate

Posted on Friday, May 10th, 2013

Time is the great eye opener.

Crocus closeI hear the clock tick, tick, tick away the days, months, years… and I realize as time passes how many things I appreciate.

Ordinary things.

Extraordinary things.

Big and small, there are moments every day when something amazes me, and I am grateful.  Not just for the things I have come to appreciate, but for my Mom, who taught me how grand the world is.  This is what I’d like to share with you.  I know this list is incomplete.  I don’t know that I could ever have a complete list.  Here’s what my Mom taught me to appreciate.

I have learned to appreciate

a thunderstorm.
warm sunshine on a late afternoon fall day.
individual snowflakes stuck to the window.
housework left behind for a walk over to the lake.
soft bread with a buttery crust fresh from the oven.
clean sheets on the clothesline billowing in the breeze.
a sink full of smelt waiting to be cleaned.
a coke bottle with a sprinkling top for ironing.
a scrubbed and waxed floor.
dogs.
cats.
crocuses peeking up out of the snow.
raking up big piles of leaves to jump in.
bonfires late at night to burn piles of leaves.
warm tomatoes picked fresh out of the garden.
a mayonnaise and tomato sandwich.
baby ducks on the river in the spring.
a full moon.
pinecones.
dandelion salad.
dandelion wine.
all kinds of rocks.
the beauty of a dark woods filled with ferns.
play time.
big band music.
cooking big meals.
having leftovers.
having homemade chicken and turkey stock.
shooting stars.
kitchen gadgets.
a good cry.
a hearty laugh.
and
a warm hug.

My Mom taught me a lot about the simplest things.  But to me, they mean the world.
I love you Mom, and I miss you.
Happy Mother’s Day.

Love,

Pa’Ann

    Beautiful, Patti.

I can’t help but wonder of all the things we learned to appreciate from our moms, what do we pass down to our daughters?
