Wine Cork Obsession – Crafty Or Crazy?

Posted on Wednesday, August 15th, 2012

I suspect if we experience a flood, my house would float.

Why?

Because I can NOT throw out a wine cork.

Considering I’ve had decades and decades of enjoying the vino, you can imagine what my stash of wine corks looks like.

Short of sound-proofing my house with them, I can’t really use them all up in crafty projects.

However, thanks to my friend Gina Mcnew of ItsHipToBeHot.com, I got to thinking maybe I should do some wine cork crafty stuff.  Gina was chatting about wine corks and what to do with them over on Facebook.  You can catch up with our conversation here:  Do Something Crafty With The Corks

Gina Mcnew Wine Cork WreathWhen Gina’s love of wine collided with her crafty mind, this was one of the cute little projects she ended up creating.  Isn’t that just adorable?  I had to share it here.

Here are the instructions for making this cute wine cork wreath.  Thanks Gina!  Just click on this link:
How To Make A Wine Cork Wreath

I think I could actually do this because;

1)  I have the wine corks, and

2) I have many people on my gift list who would like one.

I love turning things into other things, so using wine corks for things other than what they were intended for sort of tickles me.  Oh, I know the trivet, tray, and coaster kits are nice, but somehow these sillier uses for wine corks appeal to me more.

What are some of the things you’ve used wine corks for, aside from the obvious that is?  Please share them with me if you will.  I’d love to put my warehouse of corks to use!

p.s.  You really ought to get to know Gina.  Be sure to click on the links to meet her online at ItsHipToBeHot.com (her rather maniacal trip on the road to menopause) and you can find her on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/ginamcnew and her Page on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/ItsHipToBeHot

p.p.s. One of our favorite restaurants is Osman’s in Mobile, Alabama. The cuisine is Central European based – think heavy sauces and lots of capers and spices… yum!   It’s one of the few restaurants that I always order the richest, darkest, deepest red wine I can. White wine would just get lost!

Anyway, they covered a wall in the dining room with wine corks and it’s really cute.   I had to share it with you.  What do you think?  Would you do this in your house.  I would if I had a bar, I think.

Please share your thoughts with me in the comment section below.  Thanks!

I’m blushing! I am beyond honored to have been mentioned in your post Patti! I can not wait to see what you craft with your corks. I like to re-purpose things too and if I’m not too careful I’ll end up re-purposing my liver in to a door stop as it won’t be useful for anything but…BUT…in the meantime CHEERS!!! How appropriate that as I am writing this to you…it’s happy hour!
    xoxo,
    gina

I haven’t saved any wine corks for years. Hmm, but I have an idea: The wall in the restaurant made me think you might make a cork BOARD by laying them out the same way, or cutting them in half. Too bad I don’t have any corks, I’d be on it like fleas on a cat.

    Hi Tess,

Oh yes, I have seen boards made using the wine corks. That’s another cute idea. So, you don’t save corks anymore… you want me to send you some? 😉

    Thanks for stopping by!

    Good for you!
I’m not good with craft projects, only knitting. But I should start saving things like corks to do things with the grandkids. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks for stopping by, Lisa! Yes, there have got to be fun wine cork crafts that kids would enjoy. Gina made reindeer, too. Here’s the picture she posted on facebook. It’s blurry, but I bet you could get the idea from it. Looks like cork, pipe cleaners, felt, and googly eyes?

Maybe we can have a wine cork craft blog ‘carnival’ some time and post all our crafts and the directions. I’m trying to picture a knitted craft that incorporates wine corks. Can’t imagine. hmmmm…

Well, if you come up with a great craft, let me know and I’ll ship you a couple boxes of corks. 😉 Thanks again for stopping by and commenting!

I’m not a crafty girl, but you can guess that corks fascinate me (because I love wine!). I love the corks in the bar idea. There’s also another one i have been toying with in my head. You may have seen it: it’s corks shaped in your initials. Take that with a few grape leave vines and it could be great on a door.

  • Patti says: August 16th, 2012 at 10:38 am

Hi Shannon! Thanks for stopping by. Yes, I might have guessed you would enjoy a fine wine cork.

I have never seen the corks in initials. Very fun. I’ll have to see if I can find a tutorial on that. Thanks again for visiting and commenting. You KNOW I love the company here. 😉

Hi Patti, I love this post. I also save all my wine corks. Too bad those big boxes I buy don’t come with corks or I would have a lot more! My house has sort of a wine, grape, European theme to it, so the corks fit in perfect. I also have a wreath that a girlfriend made me for Christmas one year. (I’ll have to take a picture and show you). I love the idea of a wall of corks, but that would take a lot. Maybe a section of a wall is an idea, though! Now I”m going to go meet Gina!

  • Patti says: August 16th, 2012 at 10:35 am

    Thanks, Nina.

Oh yeah, the boxed wine people should just attach a cork to the box for the fun of it. tee hee! The cork wall would be cute on a small wall in a bar… I may have to change my spare bedroom into a bar. 😀

Yes, Nina, go on over and meet Gina now. She’s a fun gal to know! Thanks again for visiting!

How fun that Shannon would mention the initial idea as I was just thinking the same thing myself. My daughter had bought some paper mache “M”‘s for a craft she and her fiance did to hang on the front door of the Southern style plantation where they were married. She gave me one of the left over letters and I haven’t done anything with it yet. May need to give that a try!
The one thing I am still kicking myself over is that I didn’t ask the bartender at her wedding to save me all the corks as I would have loved to make the newly weds at least a little trivet for their kitchen with the corks from the bottles of wine enjoyed while celebrating them.

  • Patti says: August 16th, 2012 at 4:13 pm

Oh, hindsight…. dang it. Maybe if you had at least the kind of wine they poured at the wedding, you could buy the same bottles and make the trivet using the corks. I know, not the same, but we try. Be sure to post the pic of the initial-cork-art when you finish it, Gina. I’d love to see how it turns out! Thanks for coming by again to read and comment. I sure appreciate you!

  • Gina McNew says: August 16th, 2012 at 4:24 pm

Appreciate you to Patti! I will definitely let you know if it works. xo

  • Gina McNew says: August 16th, 2012 at 4:25 pm

    whoops…TOO! : )

  • Patti says: August 16th, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Ha ha! I caught that and was going to change it for you, but then saw your funny correction and decided; “That’s us bloggers, warts and all!” Typing faster than we can think! Appreciate you ‘to’ Gina! There! Now we’re even. 😉

  • Gina McNew says: August 16th, 2012 at 5:15 pm

    SMOOCHES TO YOU!

  • Barbara Younger says: September 12th, 2012 at 6:26 pm

I went through years when I couldn’t throw away a wine cork either. They’re just such useful, happy objects. Since I’m a doll person, I wonder if I could turn them into tiny dolls? A whole colony of wine loving tiny people.

  • Patti says: September 12th, 2012 at 8:08 pm

Thanks, Barbara, for stopping by! I say we put all our avatars together and create a colony of “wine loving tiny people.” I can see it now – our images glued to toothpicks stuck to the top of wine corks. You’re probably thinking much more advanced than that, eh? 😀 I just opened my bottle so I’m going to chill and give this whole doll thing some thought…

And yes, “useful, happy objects.” How can you just toss them? They make me smile, too.

    Very cool!!!!

Thank you! It is just so much fun. 😀
