Shop Around For Prescription Drugs – Something I Forgot To Do

Posted on Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Well, I did it.  I made an assumption based on what I heard and I lost money.

I shared my story a couple weeks ago with my good friend Susanne Myers over at Hillbilly Housewife, and she posted it on her blog.  How sweet was that?  Click here to read what happened to me when I went out to fill a prescription, and let me know if this ever happened to you.

I’ll wait while you read.

cue Muzak…

Okay, what do you think?  Many folks, like me, pay out of pocket for their prescriptions.  It makes sense to shop around.  But… relying on assumptions about where to get the best price can cost you a whole bunch of money.

I learned my lesson the hard way.  I’m just glad it only took me one time to figure out that the biggest store is not necessarily the cheapest store.

Thanks for reading my story and I hope the next time you spend your hard earned money you do some shopping around, too.

p.s.  Here’s a little book I found with lots of other ways to save money on prescriptions.  Just click on here or on the image to take a peek.

Thanks for the post. And yes I am surprised. Because I am probably more than a tad lazy, I hadn’t checked out many pharmacies, but felt guilty because I hadn’t switched over to the “members only” big box. I “thought” I was losing money. This is a real eye opener. Makes me think about other prices there too.

Thank you for your comment! Yeah… it does make one wonder about all their prices…

It took time to run around to all the drug stores and do the pricing, but I saved quite a bit. I’m thinking a person probably can call around, but I felt compelled to take in the prescription and get a face-to-face with the person at the pharmacy. That’s just me. I’m just glad I don’t have a lot of prescriptions… this could be a full-time job!

ALSO, I forgot to mention that I also “bugged” the person who helped me at the pharmacy counter about what other deals/coupons/specials they had. Then I threw around names like AARP and AAA to see if the store had “coupons” that could beat the AARP and AAA discounts. I was wheeling and dealing, and actually got even more money off the lowest price at the non-member only store. And that’s why I like to shop face-to-face. And, no, the big store didn’t offer any coupons.

Thanks again for commenting and I’m glad I could give you something to think about.

Wow Patti, that was a great lesson learned…albeit at a price! Thankfully, I have yet to have prescription “issues” but you can bet I’ll look into the various chains around here a little more. Glad to read that you came out of this experience pretty much unscathed….:) Take care and all the best.

    Hey there Lyle!
Yes, lesson learned, alright. Don’t believe the commercials or what anyone says about where to shop for the best prices. You got to do the leg work to save money. There’s no easy way around it. Thanks for commenting!
