Drop And Give Me 30 – Day 24 – Fit After Fifty or Fat After Fifty – The AMA Study

Posted on Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

It’s impossible for women over 50 to lose weight with exercise alone.

Oh boy.  Who saw the new AMA study today?  It’s hopeless.  Women over 50 who have gained weight during, say, those pesky perimenopause and menopause years, will never realistically be able to exercise it off again.  Ever.

The study shows that women over 50 who just want to MAINTAIN their weight have to exercise 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week.

Come on!  What’s the standard, widely accepted belief about exercise?  What do we see in all the magazines and infomercials:   “Do __________ 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week, and lose that weight!”  Baloney.

This study is irritating some women while affirming the beliefs of other women.  It does explain why so many women go out on their 30 minute walk, 3 days a week, and never lose a pound.

So, how can we be the exception to the findings of this study?  First, take a look at the highlights from the study.

1) Women over 50 who have gained weight had a very slim chance of losing the weight with exercise.   However, women over 50 who were at a healthy weight had a good chance of maintaining their healthy weight with exercise.

2) Women over 50 must exercise 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week in order to maintain their weight.  So, if you are overweight right now and start exercising to this extent, you will maintain your “overweightness?”  How sad.

3) Women over 50 who exercise 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week while eating a proper, calorie reducing, nutritious diet will lose weight.

Where does this leave us?  Back to the same old routine, that’s where.  Diet and exercise.

Losing weight has never, ever been about exercise alone – even extreme exercise.  Losing weight depends on a combination of exercise and diet.  The exercise must contain both aerobic (that’s the heart pounding stuff) and resistance (that’s the muscle and bone stuff) exercises PLUS changing your diet from fat-and-sugar-filled to nutrient filled.

Empty calories still produce fat in your body even if you’re exercising 60 minutes a day, 7 days a week.  When our metabolism slows down, most notably for women when we hit 50 ish, we have to improve our diet in order to lose weight.

The study really is not telling us anything we don’t already know in the back of our minds somewhere.  Yes, when we hear all those promises of “just 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week” we know that sounds too good to be true.  Well, now we have the study to prove it.

Even though I have chosen Scott Tousignant’s FatLossQuickie fitness program which is 10 minutes twice a day, I know that adding my 5 mile walk or 12 mile bike ride, along with eating a healthy diet, is important for my fitness, and my sanity.

Scott will be the first to tell you that his FatLossQuickie exercise program alone will not give you total health and fitness. For that reason, he also offers nutrition tips and recipes, along with motivation to get you outdoors doing things you enjoy – things that continue to burn fat and build muscle while you have fun.

My FatLossQuickie weight and cardio workouts allow me to build muscle,  burn fat, strengthen my bones, and get oxygen moving to my brain, all in the comfort of my own little home.  The walking, biking, and swimming gives me the joy of being outside, enjoying the fresh air, sunlight, and scenery, all while burning more fat and building more muscle.

Can a woman over 50 lose weight, get fit, feel great, be healthy and happy by just doing 10 minutes of weights and 10 minutes of cardio five times a week in her house?  No.  We all need a well rounded fitness program that includes some sort of walking, biking, skating, swimming, skiing, or whatever we enjoy doing outdoors.  This is a fact of life over 50, and really at every age.

Don’t let this new AMA study scare you. Remember that we always knew this somewhere in the back of our mind. Now we just have to put our fitness first and make time to do what we know we have to do.

I hope you’ll stop by Remarkable Wrinklies often.  And, do try to fit exercise into your daily routine.

Great stuff Patti! I am doing Scott’s quickie program as well. Turned 50 in July and don’t want to be a Mrs. Claus grandma. 😉 Looking forward to summer and the “garden food”. They taste so much better than store bought.

Hi Mary! Glad to hear you’re working out with Scott. It’s fun to challenge ourselves, especially with the weights, isn’t it! I just boosted my weights up quite a bit and Man oh Man! I can feel the burn now. 😉 I love the garden food, too. We go to a local farmer and buy up stuff about once a week. My Hubby always shakes his head and says “how are we ever going to eat all this stuff?” and then we do. I’ve got a big pot of purple cabbage soup going right now!

Anyway, good luck with your exercise program. I’m sure enjoying mine. This whole 50+ exercise stuff is frustrating, at times, but we got to do the work, right? Which reminds me… time for my Quickie! 😀 Thanks!

Go for it girls and you’ll be awesome.
My new lady is 63 – several years my senior – she swims a mile each day, runs 10k four times a week and is as strong as an ox even though she is trim and slim with a fantastic figure. Not an inch of fat or cellulite and as for wrinkles there’s well, just a couple.
And she’s as sharp as a button upstairs.
Its helped me too as I can run upstairs to the bedroom in very quick time when she calls!!!
