Drop And Give Me 30 – Day 19 – How To Exercise With Knee Problems
Posted on Friday, March 19th, 2010
What happens to my fitness program if I have bad knees?
Fitness after 50 may require tweaking an exercise routine for injuries, illness, and general body condition concerns.
I’ve talked to many people my age and older who say to me “But, I have bad knees. I can’t do those exercises you’re doing.”
And, they may be right, at first. Powering through painful exercise moves is a lot of rot. When you’re working at a fitness program over the age of 50 or so, you have to listen to your pain and go slowly. The wear and tear you’re feeling could be real signs of injury, and you don’t walk off an injury.
Some folks my age and older have had joint problems that have required surgery and medication. You can’t tell these folks to keep doing an exercise that hurts them. A person must be smart about their body and what it will take.
That’s where alternative exercises for bad knees comes in.
Doing exercises that strengthen the areas of your body that are weakened, either by injury or wear and tear, is important to your overall well-being. So, finding exercises that you can do to slowly build up your strength without causing pain or more injury is important.
Your knees may need special care, but oftentimes with the right exercise, you will strengthen and improve the condition of your knees – and your general fitness.
It’s hard to stay fit when we limit our exercise movements because of our “bad knees.”
When I asked my friend Scott Tousignant of FatLossQuickie.com about this problem, he directed me to his video of alternative exercises specifically designed for people with “bad knees.”
I thought I’d insert a bit of what Scott had to say in his post about working out with “bad knees.” From Scott’s post :
“If you have issues with your knees you have two choices…
You can say, “My knee is bad I have to avoid exercise or at least certain exercises and that probably means I won’t be able to achieve optimal fat loss because I am limited in what I can do.”
…Or you can say, “I have an arthritic knee and I’m not going to let that stop me from achieving the body and life that I deserve. I know other people with arthritic knees that have achieved tremendous success and I’m not going to let anything get in the way of reaching my goals.”
I’m not going to deny that you are experiencing pain or discomfort, but are you going to let that limit you? Do you think that you can turn that around?”
What will your choice be?
